This very special bespoke DEED bag was made for leading Melbourne author and Director of Writer's Victoria, Angela Savage, to match the cover of her newly released novel, 'Mother of Pearl' (by Transit Lounge Publishing).
DEED bags was very pleased to offer the making of this bespoke bag as an auction item to the highest bidder in the #AuthorsForFireys Twitter auction in January 2020. Angela's top bid of $175 was donated directly to #AuthorsForFireys - which raised $500,000 from Australia's Arts Community for the bushfire relief efforts.
I really enjoyed the whole process of designing and making Angela's bespoke DEED bag. The body of the bag is 100% premium linen deadstock fabric; the silver shells were individually handcrafted from a lovely big piece of Scanlan Theodore silver foiled leather, that I sourced in Brisbane last year from The Fabric Store; and the mini-pompoms on the bag ties are crocheted cotton.
As an author and a bag maker, I was delighted to be able to participate in this fundraiser! It goes without saying that I'm also super happy to be handcrafting DEED bags in my small Melbourne studio while saving quality fabrics from landfill.
I can also highly recommend 'Mother of Pearl' as a great read - an engaging, sensitive and thought provoking contemporary narrative, centred on an Australian woman and a Thai surrogate mother. Truly a book and story of our times.
